Hepatitis B is an infectious disease of the liver by the hepatitis-B virus. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) can cause chronic infection in 5-10% of cases, leading to liver cihrrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and even death. Hepatitis B is a common liver infection, affecting approximately 350 million people worldwide. The most serious consequences of chronic infection with HBV include the development of chronic hepatic insufficiency, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The infection can be transmitted parenterally and sexually, for example through bodily fluids and blood. In so-called highly viremic carriers, the hepatitis B virus can also be detected in saliva, bile and breast milk.
